One of America’s and certainly one of New York city’s favorite actresses is Meryl Streep firstly because she is simply exceptionally good at what she does. Nominated more than any other actor for Academy Awards and the winner of three, no one is betting that at 65 her award winning days are over. Not at all. Just watch for those current Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
Her continued excellence is very evident in her most recent role as the witch in ‘Out of the Woods’. She manages the shifts from evil crone to warm nurturer with effortless ease and a glance at the trailer video will undoubtedly send you off to see her play out the role in full.
But perhaps the other thing which endears her so much to New Yorkers is that she manages her celebrity in such an understated New York way. There is no splash and conspicuous consumption about this lady. Yes she lives in NYC but she does it quietly, melding into the passing parade in such a way that her name rarely makes it to Page six and restaurant reputations do not rise or fall on her much publicized attendances.
She is up front about her acting, her loyalties to her friends and her artistic passions but little else and she is an utterly scandal and gossip free zone. This is no mean feat in a city where both are worth serious money in the right quarters. But then it is also quintessentially ‘New York’ to not notice no matter how outrageously someone behaves and in this respect Meryl Streep is New York to her bootstraps. A quiet, dignified but joyous lady who her lets her art speak for her.
