When it comes to annointing the ‘best’ of anything in NYC it’s always a dicey proposition. What anyone likes is personal for starters and sometimes disagreement between aficionandos is so widespread that the idea of a ‘best’ is meaningless.
With bagels all of that applies, since this boiled/baked bread has such a long and iconic history in this City.
But I compared all the ‘best of’ lists for bagels and the experts did agree on a ‘best’ across the board: Bagel Hole in Brooklyn, so hurry on down to 400 Seventh Street.
But things are never easy. What became clear comparing lists was that while everyone rejected below par bagels, there was also such a strong loyalty to some bagel shops that even if there was a ‘best’ somewhere else those people would continue to buy from ‘their’ bagel shop. Murray’s at 500 sixth Ave falls clearly into this category.
As does Ess-a-Bagel at 359 First Ave and Bagel Oasis in Queens, the latter of which was right up there just behind Bagel hole on the experts lists of the best bagel shops.
Bagels are just one of those foods where everyone has a favorite and that bagel is the ‘best’ for them and blow the experts.COMMENT on what makes the perfect bagel and LIKE New York bagels in every possible form.
