There is no one in NYC sports history who is more beloved as a man that Yogi Berra. He had a sensational career as a baseballer, one of the great Yankee players of all time, but at the end of the day he was loved because he was Yogi.
He was a phenomenal baseball player and the Yankees’s supremacy during his playing career would have been in danger without his abilities. He was a shortie in baseball player terms, at just 5’7″ but he played more World Series games than anyone else, took out 3 MVP awards and had 10 World Series wins. As Rob Arthur says in FiveThirtyEight “When you add up his position, size, power and plate discipline, Berra is unique in all of baseball’s history.”
Towering above his exceptional sporting prowess and managerial smarts, Yogi forever endeared himself to everyone with his nonsensical sayings. It was the fact that his simple quotations couldn’t be understood that allowed everyone to characterize him as the friendly goofy man who could also play baseball. Keep playing and quoting Yogi.
