When you step into Gleason’s Gym in DUMBO Brooklyn you are both stepping into the past and into the future. It’s been around since 1937 and in Brooklyn since the 1960′s. Boxers from Muhammed Ali to Mike Tyson have boxed here and many, many more. Watching the video you can smell the sweat that permeates it’s walls.
Everything about the place screams old school boxing gym and it is certainly that, beloved by generations of New Yorkers for whom it embodies the essence of NYC’s great boxing past.
But it is also part of a boxing renaissance in NYC where sparring and working the ball become the best workout ever, with a majority of the people who come to Gleason’s choosing this new form of ‘boxing’ to the more traditional into the ring and get into it variety. Some of the sparring and ball work that you’ll see at Gleason’s now isn’t directed towards being punched and punching others. It’s all about choreographing beautiful, precise, non-astop boxing moves into a drenching workout that leaves everyone happy, exhausted and fit.
This Fitness Boxing workout is being taken up by other gyms. See the second video where you see a skilled female boxer taking her class through a serties of sparring moves. This is a class offered by Overthrow New York and both men and women are loving the classes, just as they do at Gleason’s. So boxing is no longer on there ropes in NYC but is up and at ‘em once again in a new form New Yokers are loving.
