New York has a strong caring tradition and it is amply demonstrated through the size and good works of New York Cares.
Begun in 1987 to take action to help fellow New Yorkers, those who are homeless and others who have difficulties coping due to social disadvantage, it now mobilizes 56,00 volunteers throughout NYC.
Each year they help over 400,000 people and partner with 1,300 community organizations improving the effectives of all programs by all working together.
Over the winter months they have 2 big programs, the first of which is the New York Cares Coat Drive which over the years has handed out over 1.3million coats to people who needed them in cold weather.
The other is the Winter Wishes program which provides holiday gifts to over 32,000 people who otherwise would not receive anything at Christmas. See the video which is a jingle about Winter Wishes which is out of date but which warmly shows the spirit of the program and the volunteers who work within it.
You can contact New York Cares at New York Cares and either volunteer or give to these two most important winter programs by a donating cash or by giving goods. LIKE that New Yorkers hearts are so big.
