The whole history of carousels in the nation is represented in NYC and now another glorious one has been added to what is already here. NYC has 12 in total, all the way from the venerable and beautifully restored Central Park Carousel to the brand spanking new one, the $16m SeaGlass Carousel opening this Thursday, Aug 20th in Battery Park.
The majority of these 12 carousels are traditional with prancing horses and other animals, many of them crafted by European woodworkers who immigrated to NYC, bringing their wonderful skills with them.
But the new SeaGlass Carousel in BAttery Park is a whole different kettle of fish, literally! Huge fiberglass fish, 30 different kinds, allow children and adults to drift up and down to the sounds of Mozart and Prokofiev, accompanied by a brilliant light show that leaves riders feeling they are underwater, see the video.
This wonderful carousle has been a long time coming so big congrats to the Battery Park Consevancy, who have had to battle Hurricane Sandy among other setbacks to arrive at this point. New York kids of all ages are going to love this, it is marvellous.
