It costs NYC and therefore you the taxpayers lots of money to get rid of food waste, see the video which discusses this.
Food waste is of course organic and therefore it is potentially a biofuel.
There’s now a trail recycling program underway in NYC to use a mixture of food waste and wastewater (poop) to heat homes in the city.
The center of the trial is the Newton Creek Wastwater Treatment Plant in Brooklyn and the resulting biogas is being used to heat 5,200 homes.
One other way of using up food scraps is shown in the video, composting, and it too is being trialed as a way to reduce the cost of disposing of food waste.
All of these recycling programs are not just to reduce the cost of food rubbish but are also part of a push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2017. LIKE cost effecdtive renewable projects for NYC.
