New York’s environmental warriors reckon they are in a battle to save planet earth and they are prepared to do what it takes to get us to pay attention. So Christopher Swain took a swim in Brooklyn’s totally foul Gowanus Canal to celebrate earth day. Yes he actually got into water so scummy and thick with horrible substances he couldn’t even see his own hands as he swam.
Of course not actually wanting to commit suicide, he did cover up from head to toe and wore a special lubricant on his face. He was swimming in a toxic soup of copper, lead, mercury, carcinogenic PBC’s DDT, poop and nasty bacteria and viruses.
He wanted to draw attention to how great the Canal would be if everyone could swim in it freely all the time. Of course before that can happen, the toxic sludge on the bottom of the canal has to all be removed and despite the money supposedly being there for that to happen there’s no action yet.
Journalists helped along his cause by turning up in large numbers and all New York papers today carried the story and the news video attached is also publicity for the cause. After all it’s not every day someone is prepared to do something as foolhardy as Christopher’s swim. Hope it pays off, who wouldn’t want this waterway and the area along its banks to be clean and rejuvenated.
