The New York Fed has been in the news because questions about the purity of the gold kept in it’s vaults resulted in an assay which proved it was even MORE pure than anyone thought. Whew!!
The New York Fed is one of those important buildings in NYC everyone knows is there but really knows nothing much about. Well it’s at 33 Liberty Street for starters.
And it’s a beautiful 1920′s building that as well as housing approximately $415 billion is gold, has a Museum on the premises and gives guided tours, though under strict guidlines.
That approximately $415 billion in gold is 98% owned by foreign nations and the Fed keeps it safe for them. The US itself owns approx.$23.9 billion of it.
It’s probably the largest gold repositary in the world but as Swiss banks don’t report their gold stocks probably this will never be known.
It is absolutely worth a visit. You must be over 16 (no exceptions, Harry Potter might have got into Gringotts but would fail here), and book in advance online at New York Fed.
