A report from the Agency that oversees and administers the State’s Tax Credit Porgram has reported that the $1 billion in tax credits given to support TV production in NYC has generated 5 times that amount in production and post production work in the year 2013-14.
The NYC film industry has doubled in 10 years since the new tax credit program was set up and there are now 42,000+ New Yorkers working in the industry. Though of course there are downsides. Many New Yorkers will tell you that in some parts of NYC, hello Lower East Side, it is sometimes impossible to walk along the sidewalk or get a park because of TV filming taking place. And some shop keepers get very antsy if customers can’t reach them because of the crowds who gather to watch the actors, camera men and others do their thing
The tax credit program has meant Califronia has lost ground to NYC in production and post production of TV shows, see the video, Orange is the New Black is one of the shows which decided to film in NYC to get those those tax credits. California is now thinking of striking back an increasing their own tax credit porgram
