Gray’s Papaya Downtown on the corner of Sixth Ave and Eigth St, home of grea hot dogs is no more.
There are many who mourn it’s Loss. There is 1 remaining Gray’s papaya however on the corner of 72nd St and Broadway.
Is this favorite hot dog eatery falling victim to changing culinary tastes, seeing as it is to be replaced by Juice Bar Liquiteria?
Well, yes and no. The reason Gray’s Papaya is leaving its Downtown location is their landlord raised the rent to $50,000 a month, up $20,000 from the previous rental. Presumably Liquiteria can meet that rent so it’s a case of one business being able to bear the cost and not another.
Too soon to say whether Liquiteria have read New Yorkers tastebuds and health obessions accurately.
The hot dog is such a quintessential New York meal that it would be a brave food forecaster who said it was now fading from the food landscape. But perhps in another couple of years it will be sold only from food carts? LIKE New Yorkers having a choice about what they eat.
