There appears to be no danger of the railings on the Brooklyn Bridge collapsing because of ‘Love Locks’ as did the railings on the Pont des Arts Bridge did in Paris.
Though both bridges have an enormous number of ‘Love Locks’ attached to them, New York and Paris are dealing with the issue differently.
‘Love Locks’ are padlocks, usually engraved, that lovers attach to bridge railing as a pledge of their undying love.
In Paris all went well until the railings of the bridge in question collapsed. There is no word that the railings that are still intact will be attended to in any way.
But the Brooklyn Bridge maintenance crews hardly leave the locks there for any time at all beofre they are cut off. See the video which shows the Brooklyn Bridge policy in action.
And there is some scorn for the ‘Love Locks’ practice from Brooklyn locals, citing wastage of resources. Surely the sale of all that scrap metal will cover the costs?
