This recent video of NYC from the skies takes a lot of beating. NYC is so frequently portrayed using only the shorthand of the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State building and Times Square.
They are very important to NYC, no doubt about that, but they are such a tiny part of the visual richness of what NYC has to offer and, after being overused so much, too familiar. So the beauty of this video is it covers all five boroughs and you get a real sense of how varied the City is, the huge breadth of what it offers and how hard it is to describe NYC in any simple way. This glorious city is so many thing to so many people because it is a deeply complex place, visually and in every other way.
A wonderful word to describe NYC is grittiness. NYC endures, it has a bedrock quality about it despite it’s soaring towers. NYC gets down and dirty just as much as it lifts your soul and this video catches all these contrasts in a meaningful way. Beautiful.
