Tackling NYC on your own is daunting: so many people, moving so fast, and all of them carefully not catching your eye. Yup, that’s New York where staying self contained is an art form because interracting in an open, breezy way with millions of people is just too much to ask. But we all need friends and if you’ve just moved to NYC or you’re here for a protracted stay then how do you meet frinedly New Yorkers, because there are, yes… millions of them. Try these things.
1. Go for a walk around your neighborhood and settle on a restaurant/coffee place/cafe that feels simpatico and comfortable and start going there often enough to get to know the wait or counter staff. Take along your laptop or a good book and in no time you will be on nodding terms with other regular patrons. The same applies to your local Bodega though few of those offer sitting down space. But waiting in line that’s different, then there’s lots of opportunities for chit chat and being on a first name basis with the owner is golden.
2. You know what interests you. It might be drawing/jazz/beer making/complex computer languages or photography. Check out New York Meet Up Groups If a Meetup group doesn’t appeal there are dozens of activities from Tango dancing on harbor side piers to dining with strangers that you can book yourself into or attend free. NYC Parks have varied activities day long you can attend free and there are a ton of sites offering classes and activities designed to allow you to enjoy yourself and meet like minded people.
3. If you live in an apartment block don’t assume all your fellow dwellers want a new friend, New Yorkers are notoriously protective of their own space. But nods on the stairway or in the elevator will weed out those who are open to a quiet chat and while I don’t wish an emergency on you, they are when everyone comes together to make sure everyone is okay and some lifelong friendships have resulted. But keeping your eye out around the neighborhood and offering to help if it is needed will achieve the same outcome, so it’s highly recommended.
