New Yorkers need no convincing that finding an apartment in NYC is tough, very tough. And now comes the revelation that the cards have been stacked against legitimate would be renters and renters who already have an apartment. There have been people manipulating the situation so shonky apartments get approved and deals are made to tip out legitimate renters so the rents can be upgraded.
Manhattan D.A. Cyrus Vance who has led the investigation is the good guy. The bad guys are City employees from the City Dept. of Buildings, property managers, ‘Expediters’ ( now there’s a creepy name), contractors and engineers. What these crooks have done is offer bribes, make illicit payments, falsify documents, wrongly lift violation notices or falsely tell renters they have to vacate. Vance did not celebrate the first round of arrests but said ‘constant vigilance’ was needed and more arrests would take place.
As the video states this is the beginning of the revelations, not the end. It’s hard enough as it is without the bad guys buying an unfair advantage. Thank you Mr D.A., round them up and let ordinary law abiding New Yorkers feel safer in all their real estate dealings. Meanwhile all New Yorkers be vigilant yourself and seek porfessional support if anything feels shonky about a lease you want or a lease you’ve got.
