Watch the video and see the NYPD instantly launch their street cred into the stratosphere as one of them does a joyous dirty dancing number with one of the Pride March revelers this year. Of course the annual Pride March was this year an especially raucous and joyful one.
Active campaigning for Gay rights kicked off in NYC in June 1969. So NYC actually had 2 big events to celebrate, the Supreme Court of America agreeing that marriage can happen between any 2 people who choose to go that route regardless of sex. And the Stonewall Inn in NYC where it all happened in 1969 was given National Historal Landmark status, because even though it’s not a great building it is where something momentous happened when gays decided to stand and fight.
The march went from Fifth Avenue in Midtown into the Village and then along Christopher Street to salute the Stonewall Inn and it’s important role in bringing about the present day judgemnt by the supreme court.
It ran for 6 hours and huge and even conservative corporations had floats, here’s looking at you Walmart. Oh how times have changed.
The Mayor and his wife were part of the parade which was pretty big deal given that they have been giving the St Patrick’s Day Parade the flick. In other words NYC was celebrating its status as a very inclusive city as well as celebrating the supreme court decision. And so it should, NYC is great that way, it is a deeply accepting and inclusive City. Sure there are pockets of prejudice, there always will be, but the nature of NYC would be very different if it hadn’t been continuously at the forefront of acceptance of all people to its shores.
