NYC has a reputation for plenty of sin and crime but the City’s disreputable past is not often assocaited with the Wild Wild West. However it is not generally known, that notorious outlaw Billy the Kid was born in NYC at 210 Greene Street on Sepetember 1859. he was christened Henry McCarty on September 28th 1859 in the Church of St peter at 16 Barclay St, NYC.
Henry McCarty (later called both William bonney and Billy the Kid), lost his father in 1863 when he was just 4. There is then evidence that his mother Catherine McCarty, took up with a William Antrim and that by 1870, they owned adjoining land plots in Whichita, Kansas.
The first murder attributed to Billy the Kid was in 1875 when he was 16. By this stage he was making his living finding work where he could and got caught up in a number of brawls between competing landowners in the West. While he was no saint, there is also no clear evidence that he was the hideous sinner he was often portrayed as being, the legends of his exploits far exceeeding the actuality. He was reputed to have killed 21 men and yet the actual figure was closer to 8 and most of those were in self defence. He died at 21, a casuality of the rough life he was living.
There is a murder sometimes attributed to him in NYC in 1876 but the evidence for him having left NYC prior to 1870 and that he never returned, is very strong and it is another example of his reputation being inflated by those willing to believe the worst of him under all circumstances.
