New York news is usually filled with current events which like New York Fashion Week, the Westminster Dog Show at MSG, sports news, business news and political news and comfortable and expected news we get every day.
Suddenly New Yorkers are also aware that bubbling along underneath this usual and expected run of events is a range of very nasty stuff.
First up came the news that cockfighting has become big business among the New York criminals and people in upstate New York and also in Brooklyn and Queens are directly involved.
3000 roosters bred to fight have been confiscated and considerable number of people arrested.
Then the FBI announced the arrest of some New Yorkers with links to the Italian Mafia.
They had been actively involved in setting up a smuggling ring bringing heroin into NYC. It’s naive to think crime isn’t always with us, but it’s a shock when two such big busts happen so close together. It’s a reminder that NYC is now, as it has always been, a place of enormous differences and complexity.
