New Yorkers like sports, gym, exercise of all sorts and now they’re trying out a brand new one for the city. It’s a sport anyone can play, involves tremendous team work and gives you a good workout. Perfect!
It’s curling, which is an ancient Scottish sport presumably designed to give Scots a fun reason to go outside and enjoy themselves in frigid winter temperatures. It’s now been appropriated by Canadians who are the world Olympic champions though there are a lot of other countries where it is also an Olympic sport, see the video.
You need a polished granite stone and someone to throw it, 2 people with special brooms who smooth the ice in front of the ball enabling it to go faster and someone who oversees the whole thing and yells instructions.
Brooklyn now has a popular Lakeside Curling Club in Prospect Park and New Yorkers are flocking to join. Membership of the club guarantees you can compete at the Olympics if you are good enough to be picked for a team. But if America did enter could they take on the very experienced Canadians and win?
It’s unlikely any Lakeside Curling Club members have any Olympic ambitions. But such enthusiastic support for this new but obscure winter sport suggests the prospect of good fun and a solid workout will continue attracting new players. And it does look like a sport you can learn without going to extreme lengths.
