Yes, in the first ride of the 2015 season the historic Coney Island Roller Cyclone Coaster got stuck on a rise and left 24 joy riders stranded. Roller Coaster staff immediately climbed up and carefully helped everyone down which meant walking along the track with the whole superstructure moving around a little as they did so. Quite safe of course but not how anyone expected to end their ride.
The whole point of a roller coaster ride is that it’s scary. You do it anyway and then it’s all over, you’ve survived and you feel amazing. But when you start the ride and instead of those triumphal downward swoops you’re stuck, stock still, on an upward sweep….that’s entirely different.
Apparently it was a small glitch, the conveyer belt mechanism that moves the car along slipped off its racks and the whole thing just ground to a halt. Unfortunately the 24 people on the ridde are now all dealing with varying degrees of roller coaster panic attached to having gone through the whole experience.
Thank heavens everyone is safe, but it is hoped the people currently running the ride check it over very carefully before anyone rides on it again. This roller coaster will be 88 yrs old in June and is on the hsitoric landmarks register. One would hope that even if the structure is that old, the driving mechanism is totally up to 21st century standards.
