New York City is very lucky to have the Fire Department it has. NYC’s firefighters are of course highly skilled and very well equipped. They have to be, a city composed to lots of either old or very high buildings presents unique challenges when it comes to fighting fires. But it is also customarily called, along with the NYPD, ‘New York’s Bravest’ because the FDNY has proved over and over again that they will give their all unto death.
September 11 was the supreme example of this but New York’s firefighters go above and beyond every day, not just fighting fires but also being primary responders to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards that arise and along with also being first responders for emergency medical services.
This great video pays tribute to how they carry out their work. It’s one without the flashing lights and screeching sirens so often seen in videos of the FDNY at work. It is a video of a group of firefighters going about their business: putting out a fire, getting injured it seems in the process of doing that and handling what is a dangerous and upsetting situation without fanfare and with a high level of skill. We thank you FDNY, and we never take what you do for granted.
