Each year for at last 7 years, New York city has had a Summer Streets program. It’s a celebration of on of the City’s greatest assets, its streets. For 3 consecutive Saturdays in August 7 miles of streets are available for all New Yorkers to play, run, walk or bike along. See the video about the zip line from several years ago. It’s a firm feature of Summer Streets and it’s available again this year, a chance to have a great time for free and see New York city in a completely different way, up pretty high!
There is a lot of biking of course, more and more of it each year of the program as New Yorkers fall more and more deeply in love with the opportunities for great bike rides in their very own city. But there’s lots of varied activities to take part in: musical performances, dancing (you can learn to salsa dance as part of that), healthy food to eat, a 25′ climbing wall and of course, the subject of the video, a 160′ zip line, which is always very, very popular.
Summer Streets is on from 7.00am-1.00pm on Aug 2, 9 and 16 from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Ave and connecting streets. All activities are completely free of charge and there’s something for all age groups. Even spry grandpa’s and grandma’s have been known to hop on the zip line and of course kids are ecstatic about it. All of us relate to the City in a different way when for just a little while all the cars are banished. The streets feel like a new space and that it’s New Yorkers who own them in a totally different and very interesting way. Summer Streets is truly one of the most interesting and exciting festivals held in NYC, a time when the City dsicovers itselg.
