There are clubs in NYC and then there are clubs. The celebs and the officially annointed beautiful people go to expensive, glittering and slick clubs where getting in is a work of art. And then there is New York’s underground club culture that a distictly grunge/glitter, pop-up, temporary feel to it. Expect to see lots of young people in fabulous clothes, a willingness to embrace the far ou5t and plenty of creative riffs on clothing, music, food and decoration.
Where will you find these clubs? Some of them very quickly come and go but one of the main places they appear in are banquet halls above places that are Chinese restaurants during the day clubs by night and whose staff change from full on waiters to club staff in the evening. One of the longest lasting is China Chalet located in Lower Broadway where this video is set. Chinese restaruants on Broadway, in the Bowery, in Brooklyn and even in Queens will wild party scenes at night that draw big crowds and the people who go are deliberately turning their back on the upmarket and more expensive NYC clubs elsewhere.
The video gives you a very good idea of what’s on offer: it’s party time, but with a slightly downmarket edge, with a drag queen/transgender/gangsta glamor, a gospel choir and The Knocks of course, laying on the disco pop with gusto. enjoy.
