Governors Island is one of the secret destinations in NYC, not because anyone has made it a secret but because it doesn’t get the concentrated attention from the media that is lavished on more well known NYC landmarks.
But everyone who cares about the city knows about this 172 acre park close to both Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park which you can ride around on a bike. Once there, not only are there interesting historic houses to see but you have spectacular views back towards Manhattan.
As well there are a number of festivals and art shows that are held there over the Spring through to Fall NYC season. The East River Ferry/train runs from both Manhattan and Brooklyn with lots of pick up points in Manhattan, so it’s very easy to get to.
However over the last 4 years another transformation has been taking place. A series of hills has been bilt at one end of the island which will not only give people who climb them a whole other view of the City but will enable kids of all ages to slide down giant slides.
See the video for the schematic of what is being built and then mark your diaries for Jul 19th this year because well ahead of schedule this great new wooded, hilly area on Governors Island is about to open.
