Be proud New Yorkers, be very proud, 160 teams of school kids crushed it at the Javits Center last weekend competing in the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition. Kids from elementary, middle school and high school levels built and manoevred their robots through a ‘Recycle Rush’ where the robots scooped up rubbish, put it in rubbish totes and then stacked the totes.
Apart from using their tech skills, in order to compete effectively the kids had to learn to handle competition level nerves and work as a cohesive team. And apart from 6 High School teams going onto the St Louis based World Championship in 2016, there are also 700 college scholarships up for grabs in this competition. New York based teams easily predominated but there were also teams from Brazil, China, Turkey and the UK.
The 6 winning teams came from Long Island City, Yonkers, Staten Island, Flushing, Manhattan and London. Isn’t that great knowing how widespresd tech talent is in NYC. Congrats to all teams and their mentors and teachers. It was a high energy, high fun, high achievement event These kids showed tremendous enthusiasm, awesome focus and mind boggling nerd power during this event with their supporters roaring out their approval and cheering them on. It was all proof positive there’s a whole generation of New Yorkers racing up behind all NYC’s existing tech engineers ready to take over when they get a chance. What a depth of talent this great city has.
