There is an interesting coming together of important baseball events this year as the Yankees great player Marianao Rivera prepares to retire and a new film is about to be released ’42′.
In baseball the number ’42′ is now forever associated with the African American baseball player Jackie Robinson who broke the color barrier in modern major league baseball and went on to craft an outstanding baseball career.
It is also the number worn Mariano Rivera who has announced his retirement from baseball at the end of the 2013 season.
And New York is in the mix because when Jackie Robinson was first signed in 1947, he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers. So the ascendancy of no ’42′ began in New York and will end in New York as Rivera is the last player in all leagues entitled wear the number which was retired as a tribute to Robinson, with players then wearing it being able to continue to do so until they too retired.
And ’42′ is now the name a film to be released this year about the life of Jackie Robinson.
Heroes carry the hope of our courage and the memory of our battles. Thank you Jackie Robinson and Mariano Rivera both of you great baseball players and both major contributors to our history as an ever striving, ever growing community.
