A well respected New York sushi restaurant has decided to abolish tipping, opting instead to put their servers on a living wage with benefits.
If all NYC restaurants made the same decision how would things pan out?
Undoubtedly a lot of restaurants owners would lobby hard against it because right now some restaurants pay their servers as little as $5 as hour and to make enough to survive they then have to collect sufficient in tips.
The argument for the current setup is that with no need to get tips servers wouldn’t work so hard or well?
Excuse me! That doesn’t say much for the professionalism and commitment of NYC servers which is pretty high in my experience.
What about the nerve wracking position a lot of servers are put in at the mercy of rude and impossible to please patrons? There’s lot to be said for everyone knowing they will have a take home pay they can rely on if they work hard and well. LIKE everyone being treated fairly.
