Not a day goes by without another NYC Taxis Story because these yellow cabs embody THE great love hate relationship of the city. Can’t live without them, can’t abide how hard they are to hail etc, etc.
Well get used to fleetingly seeing a new breed of silver/yellow cabs shaped like a crab on wheels tootling around the city. They’re Nissan LEAFs which shone during Hurricane Sandy because they kept going when gas guzzlers had no fuel.
Yes these 6 yellow ‘crabs’ are an experiment in using electric cars in the city. They promise a lot but have their drawbacks.
What they promise is a cleaner future because they have zero emissions they are much easier and cheaper to maintain because their inner workings are simpler, they are silent and they accelerate more quickly than an ordinary car.
The drawback is obvious. One charge lets a yellow ‘crab’ go 80 miles whereas an average cab does 100 miles a day.
So they have to stop and get a charge to keep going which takes 30 mins. And at the moment there’s only a few charging stations in NYC so what happens if you run out and you’re miles from the charging station? Obviously you don’t let it get to that but it means cabbies have to plan their trips differently
But 6 brave cabbies have volunteered and they’re looking forward to the break in theur day due to charging. Let’s wait and see. LIKE the look of these new ‘crabs’. COMMent on whether you think the trial is a good idea
