I don’t think there is any other fast food in NYC that is so easy to get, so cheap and so flavorsome as a New York Hot Dog.
In trawling the list of where to get great New York hot dogs, the standout is Gray’s Papaya, in 3 locations in NYC and what everyone says about it is, it’s a classic dog, it’s cheap and you get it quick. Case proven.
Of course the basics are obviously a bun, correctly toasted and a hot dog which can be everything from your basic frankfurter to various smoked varieties and made from a range of meats, see the video for one such variation.
From then on it’s the toppings you choose and in no particualr order the most popular toppings are, cheese, chili, mustard, onion, ketchup, relish, sauerkraut, french fries and barbecue sauce.
Apart from Gray’s Papaya, the other top spots are Nathan’s Famous Dogs on Coney Island, Bark Hot dogs Brooklyn and Crif Dogs East Village. Honourable mentions to Shake Shake, Asia Dog, Dogmatic and Katz’s Deli.
The thing is you can buy one anywhere, but the places listed are the ones where people queue to get in. But just as usual is the ‘walk down the street, I’m hungry, ah there’s a hot dog stand’ experience. And there is just no other food that you can get that quick and is so immediately satisfying. LIKE New York hot dogs.
