What do you like in a pool hall? Good equipment, friendly workers, good food, cleanliness, low noise level, alcohol, close by where you live?
Odds on when you find one you like you stay with it, get used to the tables, the crowd, you enjoy the familiarity and feel irritated when any part of how it all happens is shaken up.
There does seem to be a bit of a divide though between the highend pool halls and the more grungy ones.
Probably the most popular and certainly a very interesting pool hall in NYC is Amsterdam Billiards, close to Union Square. Clearly highend in decor and vibe, it has a serious 26 tables and is beloved of committed pool players male & female.
Down the other end of the scale is Fat Cat at 75 Christopher St, with 10 tables and catering not only for pool players but a clientele with a taste for games beloved of adolsescents of all ages and people who want to listen to jazz and stay up late. High grunge factor.
Between these 2 pool halls there’s variety of choice but if you want quiet, dedicated pool playing, try Space Billiard Cafe near Broadway and when you get hungry try their ramen noodles. COMMENT on what you look for in a pool halle and LIKE playing pool anywhere, anyhow.
