NYC’s tattoo history was initially all associated with sailors around Lower Manhattan and their liking for having their sweethearts name, anchors and manly tattoos on their arms. By the 19th Century the tattoo trade had become centered on the Bowery and again the main customers were sailors and soldiers.
These days tattooing has gone very upmarket indeed with brilliantly colored and beautifuolly designed tattoos that are worn by heaps of New Yorkers: male and female, young and old, celebrities and average Joes. it’s aprt and parcel of making yourself out as an individual in a crowded city.
Now see the altest manifestation of the tattooing art in NYC, a man getting a tattoo on the Lower East Side, while lying on a brick wall with the tattooist linked up to a light pole to get pwoer for his eqipment. Thank you Bowery Boogie for a great video and story.
