Riding New York’s subway can be many things: irritating, thrilling, boring or just plain entertaining. This video falls into the curiously entertaining category with a side serve of insight into the many and varied kinds of New Yorkers you can see riding the trains.
The title to this video, which was obviously shot either before or after Halloween, hence the costumes, is ‘Drunk Unicorn versus Clown Photographer’ but to me it is by no means clear the pink haired unicorn is drunk. All that is really obvious is she is very, very annoyed, hugely annoyed because the clown has taken her photo without permission. As she has a right to be if she feels its intrusive.
The irony of her performance is that while she loudly shouts at the clown someone else is obviously videoing the whole thing otherwise we wouldn’t be able to watch it. What would she have done if she had known THAT was playing out somewhere behind her. Is the lesson for all of us that we should always be aware of videoing maniacs just out of sight, no matter where we are in NYC?
The reactions of other people on the train are pretty interesting. There’s the quiet pirate sitting beside the unicorn. Then across from her is the dignified guy with the long beard who does the full on New York thing which is ignore it, it’s not happening. And sitting near the clown is the subway lawyer the guy who tries to mediate, unsuccessfully.
This could only be happening on an occasion like Halloween surely. I have been on the subway on ‘No Pants Sunday’ when trains are crammed with people with bare hairy legs on full view and fellow subway riders don’t even blink. So this unicorn/clown brawl is totally amazing with more interraction than I’ve ever seen in a subway car.
