Since 1931 all American Presidents , when in New York, have stayed at the Waldorf Astoria. This weekend President Obama was in town to do some fund raising and to have a some personal time with his two daughters and he stayed at MILLENIAL ONE near the United Nations building which, will be for the rest of his term, where he stays in New York. And the reason is that the Waldorf is now owned by a Chinese Insurance company.
When Hilton Worldwide sold the Waldorf Astoria for approximately $2 billion, see the video, it is extremely unlikely they factored in this consequence, especially since they will continue to run the hotel for the next 100 years. However in these days of sophisticated surveillance and computer hacking, especially Chinese computer hacking it is unsurprising the President’s security advisors wouldn’t agree to him staying in a property owned by a Chinese company.
So the Waldorf Astoria may now need to retire it’s Presidential suite though it is of course far too early to say what future security considerations will be with regards to where Presidents stay when in New York. It is intriguing to consider when the Waldorf was told of the new arrangements. Presidential commitments are usually decided well in advance. Would the Waldorf have been waiting for a phone call that never came or would some kind soul at the White House quietly dropped them a word so they knew they were now off the accommodation list?
