Talk about dance of the Titans! Radio city Music Hall is an icon all on its own, a huge 6,000 seat theater with 70 ft stage, it is the largest indoor theater in the world and also the best equipped. Then throw into the mix the famed Rockettes and add in those never backward in coming forward impressarios, James Dolan and Harvey Weinstein as the guys funding it and finally the best choreographers, directors and production staff available in the nation and you have the ingredients for the first Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall since 1992.
The incentive to do it successfully is huge. The Radio City Hall’s Christmas Spectacular rakes in $80m over its season. It’s unlikely the Spring Spectacular will do the same at its first outing in so long but it is aimed squarely at the very lucrative family entertainment demographic and the big tourist market. It will be filled with huge production numbers that have a very strong Manhattan theme: the lions from the entrance to the New York Public Library, Grand Central Terminal, the Knicks, the Rangers, Fashion Week and a nod to Manhattan’s harbor with the Statue of the Liberty plus a bunch of helicoptered in talent like Laura Benanti and Derek Hough. A roll call of NYC theater and TV glitterati will voice characters: Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Bella Thorne.
It will undoubtedly be very big and bold, technically innovative and will make use of the Rockettes who, with their exeptional dancing skills will make the whole thing amazing. Last year, at about the same time in the production schedule, the whole thing was yanked. That won’t happen this yer, though everyone working on the production freely admits a lot of changes are happening even as they come right down to the wire of the May 3 opening.
