There’s a poignant scene in this video when the camera takes us outside The Fairway Market and shows the water view which would normally charm onlookers, but which was the entry point for the storm surge which inundated this store and others in Red Hook Last October.
Now the Fairway is re-opening along with a range of other stores in Red Hook.
Red Hook is a close knit community and since Sandy everyone has helped each other, so this big event related to one store is really a community event, a symbol of coming back, of not succumbing to the forces of nature.
While the Fairway Market is part of a chain of such stores in NYC, it’s Red Hook incarnation is in some ways the biggest and the best, something which comes across as the guys in the video give the roll call of food departments and offerings available.
The Mayor and Miss America were on hand for this opening, plus children’s choirs and local speech makers, everyone proud and happy.
There is something exactly right about a Red Hook supermarket, a neighborhood institution, being a symbol for community help and assistance in NYC.
