The incidence of clueless audience members who haven’t quite worked out that a theater performance is a professional offering as well as fun/dramatic/mysterious entertainment seems to be increasing in NYC as these 2 videos show. It appears that unbowed by a theater being so much bigger and having a stage, some theater goers continue to behave as though they are actually in their living room and anything goes. And also to disregard the rights of other audience members.
Fortunately Patti LaPone is made of stern stuff and briskly schooled a much texting audience member in respect for actors up on the stage as well audience members who which to concentrate on what is happening on that stage. Go Patti, Broadway and all theater goers salute you.
But the video below of a man leaping on stage to plug in his cellphone onstage takes it to a whole new level. Clearly a frustrated actor himself he’s obviously decided that all those years of commitment to honing acting skills, can in his case be overlooked when in a single bound he highjacked the acting space. He has since said it was just a joke. When is it just a joke to so disrespect what a group of actors are doing?
