The video clip here is of Aerosmith at Madison Square Garden 2012. Great concert, great night and typical of the wonderful concerts that get held at MSG. How could anyone think fof moving it!
Well it has already been moved 3 times before. The current MSG is the fourth incarnation of this wondrous place. So it stands to reason that if there was somewhere else to put it, just moving it is like keeping up with tradition.
The problem as outlined in a recent NYT’s article, see here, is that the current location of MSG is stopping the redevelopemnt of Pennsylvania Station to make entry to NYC a nicer expereince for travellers.
The current owners of MSG have had a 50 year lease which has now expired and the terms of a new lease are currently being renegotiated. The owners have recently invested a lot in a redevelopment of MSG but their current plans include a lot of new advertsing space around the stadium which city planners aren’t happy about.
A solution needs to be found to help the owners while at the same time investment in the beauty and utility of the city needs to be safeguarded, especially in relation to Pennsylvania Station.
What do you think? Relocate MSG to a new, central home in NYC? Redevelop Pennsylvania Station? Leave things how they are? What trade-off would work for you? COMMENT on your preference.
