New Yorkers need no reminder right now about how cold it is. But it’s been a while since you could look over the Hudson River and see ice everywhere like it is now.
The Coast guard has a number of ice breaker boats and they’re all out there keeping shipping routes clear so cargo can get through. See the video and remind yourself this is the Hudson you’re looking at.
In the 19th Century and into the 20th Century the Hudson River and the East River used to freeze with enough regularity that people got used to walking across both quite safely, especially the East River. But it’s been quite a while since it’s happened and in fact it’s quite a shocking sight for New Yorkers to see. Let’s hope it gets warmer quickly, the ice breaker boats are done out of a job and New Yorkers have their familiar harbor back.
