When the weather gets hot, some New York dogs take to the water…competitively. It’s called dock diving and dogs take off from a predetermined distance from the end of a dock, race to the edge of the dock and then dive in to retrieve a favorite toy. The dogs love it, it’s the best game but the length of their leap is measured and the dog that leaps the furtherest wins. See the video for a demonstration of one dog doing his leap.
The whole dock diving competition was started years ago by the dog food company Purina and now it’s a staple of Country Fairs in Upstate New York. Of course as it has grown in popularity so the training has become more serious from the dog owners point of view. The dogs however just think it’s a game. Like any dog training process, the dogs start relatively young and require years of training to reach their full potential.
All the competing dogs are of the more muscular variety such as dobermans, retreivers, red setters and labradors so that when they leap there’s real power in their hind legs to send them soaring. For the owners there’s serious bragging rights at stake so they put in the years of effort to coax along their pooches. If you have a dog who you think could give the champions a leap for their money go to Hudson Valley Dock Dogs , its worth it just to see the picture of beautiful dogs in full flight leaping to catch their toys. Of course, it’s great fun being out in the sunshine, with your dog having a good time, so think about a trip upstate to have a look even if you don’t have a pooch who would just love the whole deal.
