New Yorkers love their gym and keeping fit and they love their Game Of Thrones and Medieval Festivals. Put the lot together and you have 2 of the newest keep fit crazes doing the rounds in NYC and more broadly in the nation. One is longsword fighting the other is fighting in old Medieval armor and is called Armored Combat.
And while you get a great work out doing either there’s all the fun of imagining you are fighting the worst baddie ever in Game of Thrones and WINNING! What’s not to like about knocking off a devious horrible Lannister.
Longsword fighting, part of Medieval European Martial Arts, has been around in Europe and North America long enough to be organized into a sport with rules and competitions. See the video and you will see it’s a step up from fencing which has been around for a long time. Most participants seem to love it for the exercise, the fighting and the wonder of going back into history. Click Here for NYTimes
Now a studio has opened up in NYC offering a broad range of what is called Armored Martial Arts which appears to be different to Historical European Martial Arts, allowing for a broader range of Medieval weapons to be used though they do include sword fighting see the second video. The studio is called Sword Class NYC and they are on Madison AVe between 124th and 125th Streets.
The ‘martial arts’ tag is obviously included in both sports and there is overlap though it seems as though the longsword devotees are also hooked on the ancient techniques that are being discovered as part of the mystique of delving back into Medieval times, see Click Here for Wiktenauer.com
For the average New Yorker who hasn’t heard of either sport before it’s one more way of keeping fit and having fun to add to the long, long roll call of what’s on offer in NYC.
