Saoirse Ronan, New York born and now living back here after an upbringing in Ireland is still only 21. It seems too young to have received high critical acclaim for 2 very highly regarded films, Atonement and The Lovely Bones among the 13 films in which she has already starred. But it’s all true because this amazing young woman started acting when she was 9.
And now she is at the center of Academy Award speculation about her starring role in a film of more than passing interest to New Yorkers, the just released ‘Brooklyn’.
It’s a long time since the Academy Award tom toms started beating so loud and clear when a film has just been released. Certainly we’re all used to the big bang release of superhero films and the like but this is a quiet film about the journey of a young woman from Ireland to Brooklyn to do what so many of her forebears have done, find a better life. And I don’t think anyone expected it would immediately get rave reviews.
Of course it hooks right into that experience at the heart of NYC, immigration. And it explores that theme with a sensitivity and depth that is about as far as you can get from the exciting heroics of a superhero film.
I think there’s a good chance many New Yorkers would go and see it just so they could critique its treatment of their marvellous borough Brooklyn. But you will get so much more, marvellous performances from the stars and a breathtaking one from Saoirse Ronan. thoroughly recommended
