Madison Square Garden has just hosted the annual ‘Stand Up For Heroes’ show for 2015, with a roll call of top NYC comics and of course Bruce Springsteen, see the video. Jon Stewart, John Oliver and Seth Meyers among others wisecracked their way through a heartfelt tribute to those American heroes who come back from war needing extra help. And Springsteen as well as treating eveyone to his best hits auctioned off several guitars at a huge price. the whole point of the show was to raise money to help injured vets.
It was the very best of New York on display, the deep and abiding compassion for others especially those in need plus the incredible talent of the the cream of NYC’s comics all on display. New York is a very blessed city in terms of who lives here.
And it is just as well to remember that because over the last week the very worst of New Yorkers have been on display as well. Events have taken place which shows that wearing rose colored glasses around some New Yorkers will get you taken down royally.
First the news that NYC heating companies have been scamming customers by shortchanging them on how much heating oil they get and then selling what they have drained off in order to line their own pockets.
At least 8 fuel companies have been involved in this scam with people from top executives to lowly drivers all taking part and taking their cut. Fortunately it has now all been exposed and the scumbags charged.
Then also this week came news that about 10% of the so called ‘restaurants’ that are delivering food to you via your Seemless or Grubhub app are not real restaurants at all. Hiding under the name of other legitimate restaurants they are what are called unregulated ‘ghost’ kitchens and the biggest problem is that they are unregulated and therefore a potential source of contamination caused by unsanitary cooking conditions.
Now Seemless, Grubhub and New York Consumer Affairs are on the job and we can expect that in a fairly brief time the practice of ‘ghost’ kitchens will be wiped out. But it is a definite downer that while almost all New Yorkers are honest and straightforward in their commercial dealings with others, you’ve always got to be on the outlook for scammers.
So thank you “Stand Upt For Heroes’ crew. Not only do you help veterans who need help, you help us remember how many great New Yorkers there are, heaps and heaps more than the scumbags thank heavens.
