What has happened in Red Hook Brooklyn is very sad and also seriously weird. There’s a business there called ‘Dell’s Maraschino Cherries’ that has been going for 67 years very successfully and which supplies it’s cherries to eateries and food chains all over the nation.
It appears however that the owner Aurthur Mondella was, at the same time as being the owner and CEO of the company, had either steeped himself in a vey odd fantasy lifestyle or was a straight out crook. The sadness is that as soon as his double life came to light during a police raid about environmental issues, he committed suicide.
The evidence for him living a life of fantasy is that he had a pot farm under his factory, which isn’t something you would normally associate in your mind with a successful businessman. The ‘Breaking Bad’ scenario is grounded in desperation and unless there’s a whole other story wating to come out Arthur didn’t appear to be desperate for any reason. He had above the hidden pot farm a garage in which he housed a collection of high end cars. He had constructed in that garage an elaborately devious entry to his underground pot farm which was set up to grow a large number of plants using irrigation and grow lamps.
The evidence for this being more crime that just strange, weird behavior is there seems little reason for any of it unless the resulting pot was being sold for profit. So was he doing this on his own or was there a secret criminal mastermind also involved? But given Arthur already had a thriving business, why branch out into something so dangerously criminal?
The facts available are bound to be far less than necessary to explain what’s going on. Statements by the business’s lawyers indicate they are busy trying to draw a line between the successful, thriving cherry business and whatever else poor Arthur got himself involved in. Good luck with that. I suspect there is going to be a lot of people in Brooklyn going around shaking their heads about this one for a longtime.
