NYC is so cosmopolitan, heavily built up and busy it’s always a shock to realise how close to watery disaster it is at all times. Hurricane Sandy brought the point home strongly when it flooded lower Manhattan.
And last week there was no hurricane but there were rough seas and thick fog and the two combined to cause a 76 ft commercial fishing boat run aground off Rockaway beach.
From then on it was a series of small disasters. A Coast Guard vessel sent to help capsized dumping the crew in the rough seas, bringing in more emergency rescue resources.
Eventually the soggy crew members were plucked from the sea by a Coast Guard helicopter hovedring overhead and eventually the stranded fishing vessel was helped on its way.
And all of this happened just a few miles from Manhattan.
