The red tailed hawk family which regularly has it’s new batch of eyeasses (baby hawks) up on the ledge outside the NYU’s President’s nearby window have returned this year to Washington Park Square and are being watched by NYU webcam.
Father hawk is Bobby and mother hawk is Rosie. They have had 3 baby hawks this year, Kiki, Archie and Judson. The web cam which monitors them is now on full time and you can find the link at the bottom of the Urban Hawk Blog WSP.
This is not the only red tailed hawk family in NYC but it is possibly the easiest to watch on an everyday basis because mum and dad’s hunting ground is primarily Washington Square Park
Rats of NYC watch out. You are the favorite meal of red tail hawks though they also dine on squirrels and pigeons. [In the video see one of the red tailed hawks polish off a squirrel.]
All 3 species are abundant in Washington Square Park. The pigeons have their very own set of well wishers who feed them there every day. Do the squirrels get fed also or do they have to totally fend for themselves?
Whichever, the balance of nature is maintained with the red tailed hawks getting plenty of food in WSP which they kill themselves.LIKE having the opportunity to see magnificent wild birds right in NYC.
