You know that the Art of the Knockoff has reached new heights when Tiffany’s sues Costco for selling fake ‘Tiffany’ engagement rings as has just happened.
But as the tourist Mecca of the USA in the most consumer driven country in the world, NYC of course abounds in knockoffs. Where does it start and where does it get fuzzy?
For a good representation of the difference between a straight knockoff and an ‘inspired” version of a fashion item I refer you to the video clip. Thanks Evelinicutza for laying it out for us.
But of course the centre of the NYC knockoff trade is Canal St. in Chinatown where you can buy cheap knockoff DVD’s, perfume, electronics, handbags, sports equipment, watches and the rest.
It is however a rather seedy experience with whispered directions to backrooms, walkie talkies, uncomfortable lurking, cars with tinted windows and the absolute certainty that you will be cheated.
Just reflect that over 1 million American jobs were lost to knockoffs last year and refer visiting friends to sample sales and outlets that sell the real deal more cheaply.
