John Lennon would have turned 75 last week and New York remembered because there is a transcendent bond between this most gifted of men and the City in which he started to heal his soul. New York city he said was the place in which he wished he had been born. In the first video see him singing one of his signature songs ‘Come together’ in NYC in 1974, a song which he wrote with Paul McCartney.
Then see him in this next video just walking through Central park and gradually transforming into the Pied Piper as people welcome him with obvious delight. he said one of the reasons he loved NYC was that he could be anonymous. In this instance, given that he was being filmed, we can only assume that the cast iron NYC rule to leave celebrities unacknowledged was abandoned in the delight of the moment.
And finally you see the human peace sign that thousands made in Central Park at the weekend as a tribute to someone who New Yorkers love, a tribute which acknowledges that this most anguished of men was also dedicated to peace: peace between nations, between people and within people. Rest in peace John, we will never forget you.
