If you want to feel really good watch this video of a dance party on a NYC subway train. The MTA is far from anyone’s favorite City utility at the moment. There are so many trains that run late or not at all, peak travel times are a nightmare and let’s face it you are miles underground and the only thing between you and complete blackness and cold are some elctrical wires that may or may not malfunction because of Hurricane Sandy.
But New Yorkers are eternal optimists, they love partying and they love dance music. So an enterprizing group of young New Yorkers took things into their hands, set up a DJ music computer deck, installed strobe lights, got the dance music going, handed out mini glow sticks and got a whole carriage full of people dancing. Their only note of caution was not doing it at a time of peak travel.
And you have to ask which other young people show this much chuztpa, which other passengers throw themselves into it all with such glee and which other people would find such pleasure in the joy of living. Of course people everywhere do these things. But it’s all usually on display at events where people go especially to enjoy themselves?
In New York the subway is this place of magic alchemy where grindingly boring journeys can be suddenly transformed by some choosing a more joyous expression of what life is all about and then everyone joins in because they also choose laughter and enjoyment over just sitting there. An uplifting ‘Only in New York’ moment
