Rats are a fact of life in NYC, perhaps more so than anywhere else in the world. The city is the perfect habitat for them given the type of housing, the climate, sanitation practices and the huge population.
They’ve recently been in the news more than usually because they seem to be pestering different groups of residents following their displacement from their usual haunts after Hurricane Sandy.
The residents of Lower East side, Lower Manhattan, Greenpoint, Coney Island, Carroll Gardens and Red Hook are in particualr distress but the rats are also making new inroads into the Upper East Side and neighboring areas.
The rat numbers in the 5 boroughs are huge. At least as many as the number of humans, 8.3 million, and perhaps as many as 4 rats per person, a whopping 32 million. Yuck.
As well as numerous programs run by the City Administration there are a big group of professional NYC Rat Catchers who help keep the rat population under control.
When you watch the video there’s no doubt these Rat Catchers take some relish in their job. Go rat catchers!!
