As you watch this really great video of a new absolutely huge lighted ad in Times Square you probably don’t realize that as well as adverising things, those big ads fulfill another role. Sure that secret role is an unintended consequence but it’s a consequence that means a lot to the wellbeing of New Yorkers.
Times Square is of course made very colorful with lots of these big ads, and it also has tourists that come in such large numbers that native New Yorkers try hard to avoid going near the place. And it also has more high priced, absolutely awful food than anywhere else in NYC, hint head towards Hell’s Kitchen instead and get yourself some delicious food, most of it gratifyingly cheap by comparison.
But those big ads that the tourists marvel at are doing everyone in NYC a favor. They are an absolute magnet for insects who fling themselves to death against them in their trillions daily. As a result NYC is almost bug free, at least the variety that fly through the air. Of course the Times Square ads don’t do that all on their own because NYC has many ads scattered around and many lights in buildings all of which are crack cocaine to flying insects. But those really big suckers in Times Square, they an unrivalled opportunity to mainline to insects flying by. So thank you big ads, we all scratch a lot less as a result.
